About Peru
Located in western South America, bordering the South Pacific Ocean between Chile and Ecuador, Peru is a country of diverse landscape and beautiful cultural traditions. Quechua Indians make up nearly half of Peru's population. Poverty and unemployment levels have fallen dramatically in the last decade, and today Peru boasts one of the best performing economies in Latin America. Though its economy has grown rapidly, Peru continues to face economic problems stemming from natural disasters, a struggle to develop nontraditional export industries, and limited agricultural areas. Traditional handicrafts—including weaving, ceramics, and metalworking—are inspired by both indigenous and Spanish cultures.
