Intercrafts Peru
Kuyanakuy Embroiderer
Intercrafts Peru, the export marketing section of
Central Inter-regional de Artesanos del Peru (CIAP), represents 20 Peruvian artisan cooperatives with a total membership of about 400 artisans and their families. Representatives from all 20 producer groups meet once a year to make decisions about budgeting, operating costs, shipping, and to elect a new board of directors. Artisan groups belonging to CIAP come from Ayacucho, Puno, Cusco, Pucallpa, and the poorer barrios surrounding Lima. CIAP offers its members benefits such as health care, a rotating loan fund, advances to purchase raw materials, a community soup kitchen, school supplies and books.
The women who make the beautiful arpilleras (tree skirts & bean bag nativities) are members of one of CIAP's partners, the Kuyanakuy Cooperative, which means "loving one another" in Quechua.

Sitting together in this workspace has improved our skills by learning from each other. We didn't know each other before, now we have more community and unity. - Atule Nyaaba - Trade Aid, Ghana.
