Casa Romero Workshop

Samuel Irturbide, Nahuat Artist

Casa Romero is an artisan workshop that was started in 1993 to provide a place for indigenous artisans to receive training and support in selling their products in a just manner.  Casa Romero began its work with a small group of indigenous artists who were selling their crafts on the street in Cuernavaca and sleeping underneath a downtown church with their children. Casa Romero is one of several projects run by Vamos!, a non-profit organization dedicated to working on community development in poor neighborhoods in and around Cuernavaca.

The artists at Casa Romero developed en eye for beauty and a talent for painting growing up in their indigenous Nahua community of San Agustin Oapan, known for its rich artistic tradition.  Casa Romero offers a place for the artisans to work together, improve their designs and better their lives.  Today, the group has grown to include more members and the artisans are able to support themselves and their families.

Each of the pieces from Casa Romero comes signed by the artist who painted it.
