| Suraya Juma, Sudanese Refugee | In southern Sudan, a peace agreement was signed in January 2005 ending the 21-year civil war between the largely Muslim north and the predominantly Christian south. Over 1,500,000 lives were lost and millions of refugees fled the country, many to refugee camps in neighboring Uganda. The goal of IWASSRU, the International Widows Association of South Sudanese Refugees in Uganda, is to provide support for the orphans, widows, and disabled victims of the war who are living in refugee camps in northern Uganda. Funding for the Amazing Grace Orphanage and Widow Centre comes from the sales of handcrafts ( baskets, beaded jewelry, wood carvings), agricultural projects, and donations from friends in the Episcopal Diocese of Kajo Keji in southern Sudan. In addition to providing basic needs for 30 orphans in the Amazing Grace Centre, IWASSRU also sponsors a foster care program which has placed over 300 orphans with families in nearby refugee camps.
